MY THOUGHTS⇣

A story of best friends who morph into something more..until they end up on -opposing sides...and become star-crossed lovers, set against the backdrop of the Star Wars Universe.  Packed with new characters, the ones behind the scenes in the movies, and plenty of action. With perspectives of life from both sides; including both the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance.

The narration of the Star Wars books is phenomenal because of the sound effects as always...but...this really needed a second narrator for the female voice (Ciana).  Not that Pierce Cravens wasn't good...because he totally was.  I'm going to reiterate what I've said a dozen or more times before...when you have a male and a female perspective (POV), it helps to separate narrators for each so the listener always knows whose head they are in.

SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
Just a year and a half after the tragic death of his wife, Bill Price’s fifteen-year-old daughter, Summer, and her best friend, Haley, disappears. Days later, the girls are found in a city park. Haley is dead at the scene, while Summer is left beaten beyond recognition and clinging to life.
As Bill holds vigil over Summer’s bandaged body, the only sound the unconscious girl can make is one cryptic and chilling word: No. And the more time Bill spends with Summer, the more he wonders what happened to her. Or if the injured girl in the hospital bed is really his daughter at all.
When troubling new questions about Summer’s life surface, Bill is not prepared for the aftershocks. He’ll soon discover that both the living and the dead have secrets. And that searching for the truth will tear open old wounds that pierce straight to the heart of his family…

MY THOUGHTS⇣

I originally tried to read an ARC of this a few years ago...and I found myself unable to get into it.  I figured maybe someday once the Audiobook comes out that I could try again.  It took me long enough, but I finally got around to it.

John Lindstrom was a competent narrator with a pleasant voice and I'm glad that I went with the Audio.  It really helped with the main issue I had with this...I didn't care for the main character of Bill.  He was exhaustingly repetitive and he tended to go off half-cocked and crazy. Thank goodness for his sister Paige, she was his much-needed voice of reason.

Despite that, the overall mystery of his daughter's disappearance was twisty and engaging and basically a parent's nightmare.  My favorite kind of mystery has many layers, where each one is revealed as the story progresses towards the conclusion and this one delivered on that.

Review⇢ The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros

SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
Beckett,
If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have.
I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride.
My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.
And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.
So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.
Please don’t make her go through it alone.
Ryan

MY THOUGHTS⇣

Finally, my first five-star rating (not counting my re-read/listen of The Grace Year).   I was wondering if I'd become too jaded, too unfeeling, to really let a story get under my skin anymore.  This book not only got under my skin, it even made me cry, It was actually quite heartbreaking.  With everything that this woman had to through with her child, I couldn't help wondering what it would be like to go through all that with an ongoing pandemic added to the mix.

I had a few issues with the back and forth will they or won't they, between the Hero and Heroine...but Havoc (the retired military/rescue dog), plus Colt and Maisie (the twins) were such likable characters it was only a minimal hiccup for me.  Added to that the splendid narration by Teddy Hamilton and Jennifer Stark that was perfectly executed...and voila, my first five-star rating of 2020.  I really like Rebecca Yarros writing and storytelling finesse.  I think she has made my list of top 5 go-to Authors for Romance...which also includes Colleen Hoover, Emma Scott, Amy Harmon, and KA Tucker.

REVIEW⇢ RUST & STARDUST

SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
The gripping, heart-wrenching novel of Sally Horner, the 11-year-old kidnapping victim whose abduction in 1948 inspired Nabokov's Lolita.
Camden, NJ, 1948. When 11-year-old Sally Horner steals a notebook from the local Woolworth's, she has no way of knowing that 52-year-old Frank La Salle, fresh out of prison, is watching her, preparing to make his move. Accosting her outside the store, Frank convinces Sally that he’s an FBI agent who can have her arrested in a minute―unless she does as he says.
This chilling novel traces the next two harrowing years as Frank mentally and physically assaults Sally while the two of them travel westward from Camden to San Jose, forever altering not only her life, but the lives of her family, friends, and those she meets along the way.
Based on the experiences of real-life kidnapping victim Sally Horner and her captor, whose story shocked the nation and inspired Vladimir Nabokov to write his controversial and iconic Lolita, this heart-pounding story by award-winning author T. Greenwood, at last, gives a voice to Sally herself.

MY THOUGHTS⇣

I've never read Lolita, and after listening to this...I'm pretty sure I don't want to.  I'm not sure who's pov it's told from, but if it's told from the pedophiles pov, I won't be able to get through it.  For me, it wasn't just the forced intercourse (which is not overly explicit, thank goodness), it's the lies he fed her...the terrible lies, I just wanted this girl to know more, to know better than this.  It was gut-wrenchingly sad at times.

This is really well-written and the story is poignantly told, and still, it didn't wrench me out of this slump.  I haven't rated anything 5 stars in quite some time...pretty much the whole year, actually.  I thought for sure this one would do it too.  I did love the way the title of the book and the cover are woven into the story.

Therese Plummer's narration doesn't always work for me...but in this story she did.  Her voice was a little whispery, but she did a little girl's voice perfectly...endearingly so.

SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
Patrick Cusimano is in a bad way. His father is in jail; he works the midnight shift at a grubby convenience store; and his brother’s girlfriend, Caro, has taken their friendship to an uncomfortable new level.  On top of all that, he can’t quite shake the attentions of Layla Elshere, a goth teenager who befriends Patrick for reasons he doesn’t understand and doesn’t fully trust. The temptations these two women offer are pushing Patrick to his breaking point.
Meanwhile, Layla’s little sister, Verna, is suffering through her first year of high school.  She’s become a prime target for her cruel classmates, not just because of her strange name and her fundamentalist parents: Layla’s bad-girl rep proves to be too a huge shadow for Verna, so she falls in with her sister’s circle of outcasts and misfits whose world is far darker than she ever imagined.
Kelly Braffet’s characters, indelibly portrayed and richly varied, are all on their own twisted path to finding peace.  The result is a novel of unnerving power—darkly compelling, addictively written, and shockingly honest.

MY THOUGHTS⇣

The lives of all these people are on a collision course...and this is the sorted story of how they arrive there.  You know some shit is going to hit-the-fan in a town called Ratchetsburg...

While some of the characters are teens, the story itself is rather heavy.  If you are looking for a happy ending...this isn't it.  It's all about getting the short-end of the straw in life.  It's raw and not pretty.  It's both deeply disturbing and deeply affecting at the same time.  It even almost pulled me out of my slump (I haven't been moved enough to give anything 5 stars lately)...not quite, but close.  Hopefully, I find a book that does, soon.

The Audio is performed really well by Michael Goldstrom, they just should have had a female narrator for the female voices.  It would have upped the narration rating to a full five stars, then.

REVIEW⇢ BEST DAY EVER

SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
The perfect marriage is the perfect illusion.
Paul Strom has the perfect life: a glittering career as an advertising executive, a beautiful wife, two healthy boys and a big house in a wealthy suburb. And he’s the perfect husband: breadwinner, protector, provider. That’s why he’s planned a romantic weekend for his wife, Mia, at their lake house, just the two of them. And he’s promised today will be the best day ever.
But as Paul and Mia drive out of the city and toward the countryside, a spike of tension begins to wedge itself between them and doubts start to arise. How much do they trust each other? And how perfect is their marriage, or any marriage, really?
Forcing us to ask ourselves just how well we know those who are closest to us, Best Day Ever crackles with dark energy, spinning ever tighter toward its shocking conclusion. In the vein of The Couple Next Door, Kaira Rouda weaves a gripping, tautly suspenseful tale of deception and betrayal dark enough to destroy a marriage…or a life.

MY THOUGHTS⇣

Told mainly over the course of a day...in what is dubbed THE BEST DAY EVER.  Paul tells the story of his and Mia's life to that point.  Told completely from Paul's warped point of view, you'll slowly get a picture of what makes Paul tick.  If you look up sociopath on Google it says this is the profile of one...

⌧Glibness and Superficial Charm.
⌧Manipulative and Conning.
⌧Grandiose Sense of Self.
⌧Pathological Lying.
⌧Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt.
⌧Shallow Emotions.
⌧Incapacity for Love.
⌧Need for Stimulation.

Paul ticks every one of these...and does it well.  So much so, that I literally laughed out loud often while listening to this.  The author worked the title into the story really well, and I always love that.

Graham Halsted played his part swimmingly, although I found my mind wandering often...not sure if it was the narrator's fault, the slowness of the story itself, or me...could have been a little of all three.  Amy McFadden only narrates the epilogue...but hey, she did that epilogue really well.

REVIEW⇢ BE NOT FAR FROM ME

SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
The world is not tame.
Ashley knows this truth deep in her bones, more at home with trees overhead than a roof. So when she goes hiking in the Smokies with her friends for a night of partying, the falling dark and creaking trees are second nature to her. But people are not tame either.

And when Ashley catches her boyfriend with another girl, drunken rage sends her running into the night, stopped only by a nasty fall into a ravine. Morning brings the realization that she's alone - and far off-trail. Lost in undisturbed forest and with nothing but the clothes on her back, Ashley must figure out how to survive despite the red streak of infection creeping up her leg.

MY THOUGHTS⇣

A gruesome tale of survival, filled with misadventure and ruminations about life.  I haven't listened to a Mindy McGinnis book, yet, that I didn't enjoy.  Her books are so varied and move between genres seamlessly.  So far, I've consumed a dystopian duo about water shortage, and a stand-alone about heroin addiction, and now this.

Ashley (the MC) is badass...once you read this...I don't know how you cannot realize that about her.  She also doesn't always make the best life choices, but when it comes down to it, she's does own them.  My only question after listening to this...can a person really get that lost and off the grid and not see someone for that length of time?  I've never been to the smokies, or even near them, so I guess I don't know if they are really that vast.

This story is super graphic, with some scenes that will make you cringe, but it moves along at a quick pace.  The narration by Brittany Pressley is terrific...I really like her as a narrator...for me, her voice is perfect, not too high pitched or shrill and not too nasally either.

MONTHLRE-CAP

FEBRUARY

What a February it was...First off, we got a new puppy...the people we got her from said she was 7 weeks old and her mother died giving birth to her.  So sad...we took her to the vet to see about getting her some shots and they said she was still too young because she was more like 5 weeks old.  So far she is doing good, and she is such a cutie...she is a mix of Lab and Husky and her name is Sophie...She has one bright blue eye and one that is darker blue, and I'm thinking it might end up being brown, eventually.  It's hard to say because she is only 6 weeks old.

Since we didn't get Sophie until the 23rd...I still managed to get quite a few books finished.  That could change for March because she sure is a handful.  I've been calling her zombie dog...since her favorite thing to chew on is human flesh.

My stand-outs for the month being my reread/listen of The Grace Year and A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, which has a full-cast narration and was really awesome.

JANUARY RE-CAP & WHERE I'VE BEEN...OR AT LEAST WHY I'VE BEEN ABSENT FROM HERE

I've mostly been MIA from Booklikes...after the whole weekend with no booklikes...I think I just liked not posting on here too.  But not only that.  Not counting your books as read, plus the general slowness of the website, have all led up to this.  It's definitely not you all, though

So, I've decided to just post my monthly updates on here for now...I may change my mind in the future, especially if someone from booklikes shows up and makes some much-needed updates and changes.  I still want to play Halloween Bingo, so I will definitely be around for that.

RECAP: JANUARY

I've been busy this January.  I changed the name of my blog from Leah's Bookish Obsession to Can We Talk About Audiobooks.  I decided I want to focus on the format I "read" the most of...that being Audiobooks.  I'm impatiently waiting for Netgalley to add Audiobooks, too.  I also got through a few books too...

The Other Mrs. Miller - Allison Dickson

SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE

Two women are watching each other.

Phoebe Miller isn’t sure when the rusty car started showing up in the cul-de-sac she calls home, or why its driver would be spying on her. What could be interesting about an unhappy housewife who drowns her sorrows in ice cream and wine and barely leaves her house?

Only one knows why.

When a new family moves in across the street–the exuberant Vicki, who just might become the gossipy best friend Phoebe’s always wanted, and her handsome college-bound son, Jake, who offers companionship of a different variety–Phoebe finds her dull routine infused with the excitement she’s been missing. But with her head turned she’s no longer focused on the woman in the car. And she really should be…

Thoroughly entertaining despite some believability issues, some of the things that go down in this are rather absurd but I still found myself eager to listen.  Actually, the more I think about the story the more dubious I feel about it, so that's my cue to end this review.

Protect the Prince (Crown of Shards #2) - Jennifer Estep

SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE

Magic, murder, adventure, and romance combine in this second novel in the exciting Crown of Shards saga from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Estep.

Everleigh Blair might be the new gladiator queen of Bellona, but her problems are far from over.

First, Evie has to deal with a court full of arrogant, demanding nobles, all of whom want to get their greedy hands on her crown. As if that wasn’t bad enough, an assassin tries to kill Evie in her own throne room.

Despite the dangers, Evie goes ahead with a scheduled trip to the neighboring kingdom of Andvari in order to secure a desperately needed alliance. But complicating matters is the stubborn Andvarian king, who wants to punish Evie for the deaths of his countrymen during the Seven Spire massacre.

Dark forces are also at work inside the Andvarian palace, and Evie soon realizes that no one is safe. Worse, her immunity to magic starts acting in strange, unexpected ways, which makes Evie wonder whether she is truly strong enough to be a Winter Queen.

Evie’s magic, life, and crown aren’t the only things in danger—so is her heart, thanks to Lucas Sullivan, the Andvarian king’s bastard son and Evie’s … well, Evie isn’t quite sure what Sullivan is to her.

Only one thing is certain—protecting a prince might be even harder than killing a queen…

MY THOUGHTS⇣

Despite excellent narration, an intriguing plotline, and exceptional action scenes, I found myself not into this quite as much as I was the first book in the series, but only slightly.  The best part and a new addition to this series were the gargoyles...I've never read anything with gargoyles before...and I quite liked this author's take on them.  Who knew a stone could be so lovable.

If I had pinpoint what it was about this book that I didn't care for, it would have to be all the lies and deceptions going on between the two main characters.  I guess I thought Evie wasn't into that kind of drama and whatnot. Overall, I will continue with the series and I'm still hanging in there until the end, Book #3, Crush The King is due out March of 2020.

MY THOUGHTS

At 28% I'm throwing in the towel on this one.  I just can't get into it.  I am not of fan of this Author's writing style.  It's too wordy, in more than one way, almost as if she's trying too hard.  At this percentage, I've already highlighted 11 words that I've never seen used in anything I've ever read.  I'm not saying they aren't actual words, I'm saying why use a word that's so obscure...that it takes someone out of the story trying to figure out what it means.  When crafting a story it should bring the reader in deeper, not take them out completely.  It also has the kind of prose that gets deep into everything, going off in tangents in different directions that loses me too easily.  I just needed her to get on with the story...sadly it took too long to go anywhere for me.

I should mention that others have really liked this.  It's why I didn't DNF at 5% like I originally wanted.

Re-Cap

December

11 books total, plus 1 novella.  10 of which were Audiobooks and 2 that were Netgalley eARC's.  Not one of my best months, but I managed to accomplish my # of books for the year goal, which was 155.  I also made my page count goal of 50,000. I slid in with a 50,268-total-page count.  Not bad...I'm not upping it for next year, though...gonna keep it at 50 thousand.
